Food loss happens before food reaches the consumer, often due to poor harvesting approaches, storage problems, or transportation damage.

Food waste occurs at the retail and consumer levels. Food waste is food that individuals, manufacturers, grocery stores, or restaurants throw out because of imperfections, over-preparation, or spoilage.
